Giving to HBAS

Each year a number of alumni and friends pledge their commitment to the Harvard Black Alumni Society’s future by making a donation to the HBAS Annual Fund. Alumni donations to the Annual Fund make it possible to: maintain the HBAS website, coordinate the Black Alumni Mentoring Program, make resources such as the HBAS Guide to Applying to Harvard College available to prospective students, and host activities and events that bring alumni together for networking and fellowship.
Spotlight: Alonzo Sherman

Alonzo Sherman
AB, Economics, 2003

Alonzo was born and raised in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn . He attended Brooklyn Technical High School where he majored in Biochemistry and led the Varsity Swimming Team to four consecutive Division Championships. Alonzo also trained and competed for Trots Finmen Swim Club, one of a handful of all-black competitive swimming programs in the country. He graduated from Harvard College in 2003 with an AB cum laude in Economics. During his tenure at Harvard, Alonzo engrossed himself in the Harvard community. In his senior year, Alonzo served as President of the Harvard Black Men's Forum, an organization with which he had been integrally involved since his freshman year. As Minority Recruiting Coordinator in the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, Alonzo was the first point of contact for thousands of prospective and incoming students. Despite being a top-ranked competitive swimmer, Alonzo walked-on to the Varsity Lightweight Crew Team. A resident of Mather House, Alonzo was also an active member of the Black Student's Association and the Snowboard Club.

Regarding his views on mentoring, Alonzo had the following to say: "Often we see the mentor-mentee relationship in the same light as the teacher-student relationship. I think that mentorship is much more dynamic, it's a two-way street. In addition to imparting knowledge and experience, I have learned much about myself as I developed relationships with my mentees."

Alonzo was formerly a senior banking analyst in the healthcare corporate finance group at UBS Investment Bank and is curently working at a private equity firm in New York City. In his spare time he enjoys snowboarding/skiing, marathon swimming and spending time with family and friends.

Alonzo is currently mentoring Curry Cheek '08, but may be willing to take on additional mentees.

Please welcome Alonzo to the BAM family.

always analytically minded and competed in chess and math competitions
throughout junior high and high school. An avid swimmer and tennis
player growing up, Richard made sure to stay active outside of school.
During his summers, he attended advanced classes at a local community
college and attended pre-college programs such as MITES at MIT (class
of 1990). He graduated from North Miami Beach High School in 1991.

While

After making a significant impact in their structured products group,
he moved on to work for the Internet start-up company govWorks.com,

Company, where he is now a Vice President. Rice is a boutique New
York-based investment bank that specializes in municipal derivatives.
The company is owned by an African-American, is dominated by Black

2003, but welcomes the opportunity to mentor another student.

Regarding
her views on mentoring, Jacinda had the following to say: " I want to
give back to Black community. I also want to help young gifted people
sort out the di z z ying array of life choices available to them. "

Please welcome Jacinda to the BAM family.

Mentoring Program

Black Alumni Mentoring Program

Community Building for Our Future

About Us

Learn more about the BAM program's history, mission, and organizers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

For everyone's convenience, the questions in this section are related to how the BAM Program works and have been raised by mentors and mentees.

Mentoring Resources

Although alumni and graduate student mentors have a good sense of what concerns their college mentees might have because they lived through that stage of life, we thought it would still be helpful to include some a list of common concerns that the BAM team has identified as relevant to some most of our college-age mentees.

BAM Profiles

In profiling BAM participants, we hope to achieve a few goals. First, we want to recognize the experiences and achievements of those who we have incorporated into the BAM family. Second, we want to illustrate the diversity of backgrounds and pursuits that make our community rich and powerful. Finally, we want to publicize individual profiles of participants so that those who may not be directly connected as a mentor or mentee can learn more about others in the BAM family. We have profiled the following individuals:

Alumni

Richard Pengelly AB '95 , CFA
Jacinda Townsend Gides AB '92, JD, MFA

Recent Alumni

BAM Profiles: Sheila Adams

Sheila Adams
AB, Sociology, 2005

Sheila Adams is a proud native of Harlem and the Bronx in New York City . As a Prep for Prep 9 alum, she attended Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut where she was a student-athlete, a peer counselor, student body vice-president, and the recipient of Choate's highest honor to a graduating senior, the School Seal Prize.

Once at Harvard, she immediately immersed herself in student government, quickly became a member of the Undergraduate Council's leadership on the Student Affairs Committee, and led a number of successful initiatives enhancing academic, residential, and student life at Harvard. Additionally, as Arts and Entertainment Chair of the Black Students' Association (BSA), she organized several social events, including Apollo Night, and helped guide a multitude of cultural, political, and public service activities.

She has also taught ESL classes to adult immigrants and served as a college counselor for underprivileged high school students. She currently works as a volunteer dealing with workers' rights issues at a Bra z ilian immigrant center and at a local youth center as a mentor to high school students.

In addition to her extracurricular pursuits, Sheila took on her first international experience by studying abroad in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil last spring. After earning her AB in Sociology this coming June she plans to return to Brazil on the Michael C. Rockefeller Memorial Fellowship to do a public service project that provides educational and other resources to homeless children. After her year in Brazil, she plans to either teach through Teach for America or attend law school.

Sheila on mentoring: "I have to come to see mentoring as very instrumental in my own life. Consequently, I encourage younger people to seek out mentors, and I take every opportunity to pass on whatever advice and guidance I can to those who can benefit from it.

Sheila is currently being mentored by Felicia Rector '94, JD , and herself mentors Samantha Lucy Pierre '08.

Please welcome Sheila to the BAM family.

The goals of HBAS are as follows:

To promote acquaintance amongst alumni

To provide a conduit for professional networking

To encourage strong alumni interest and investment in black student communities at the College and all Harvard schools

To increase alumni involvement in University affairs and events that impact the black communities tied to the College and all Harvard schools

Mentoring Resources

Mentoring Resources

Although alumni and graduate student mentors have a good sense of what concerns their college mentees might have, we thought it would still be helpful to include a list of common concerns that the BAM team has identified as relevant to most of our college-age mentees. Although alumni and graduate student mentors have a good sense of what concerns their mentees might have because they lived through that stage of life, we thought it would still be helpful to include some concerns that the BAM team has identified as relevant to some mentees.

Common Undergraduate Concerns

"How do I navigate the Medical/Law/Business/Graduate school admissions process?"

"How do I decide what courses to take or major to choose? Should my decisions be based on my anticipated career path or what interests me most?"

"How do I network with my peers/faculty?"

"How do I establish myself now so that I won't miss any opportunities before its too late?"

"I basically relaxed the summer after my first-year and took a low intensity part-time job. How do I go about researching my first real internship?"

"I'm thinking about studying abroad for a semester or using this summer to travel somewhere on Harvard's dime. Do you have any advice with writing proposals, researching opportunities and generally making my study abroad experience as enriching as possible?"

"What are the benefits/drawbacks of joining a fraternity, sorority or Harvard Final Club?"

"I got my first credit card application in the mail. I know generally that it is important to have good credit, but I'm not sure exactly how to manage my credit. Do you have any advice?"

"I want to eventually start my own business. Does it make sense to try and start something now when I have all these great resources and free time? Do you have any experience with this or know anyone that has?"

"Do you have any advice on choosing the 'right job'? What can I expect in my first job?"

About BAM

About BAM

History

After the success of the 2003 Black Alumni Weekend, the Harvard Black Students' Association and the Harvard Black Alumni Society joined together to create the Harvard Black Alumni Mentoring (BAM) Program. The BAM Program is an e-mentoring program utilizing the web and email to connect undergraduates and alumni across the country. Current undergraduates and recent graduates of the college benefit tremendously from the insight and knowledge of mature alumni who have lived their aspirations. Yet more accomplished alums reap the rewards of mentorship, in addition to the opportunity to shape the future of our alumni community.

In the program's first year, over 70 undergraduates, graduate students and alumni were matched. Positive feedback has been received from most pairs, and several pairs have maintained fruitful relationships into our second year. Due to generous donations the program is now in its second year, and looks forward to community building for our future.

Mission

In line with the mission of the Harvard Black Alumni Society, the BAM Program aims to contribute to the mutual professional development and cultivation of Black graduates both present and future. BAM will approach this goal by bringing undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni together and facilitating the transfer of knowledge and experience among them so that a mentor's hindsight can become a mentee's foresight. Furthermore, BAM aims to extend this transfer of knowledge to "budding" Black Harvard students, by reaching out to youth beyond the Harvard community. We will work hard to ensure that each of these relationships is productive, enriching and enduring. BAM will be a way for people to connect with each other, learn from each other's triumphs and failures, and locate role models whom that they may not have had previously the opportunity to meet otherwise .

BAM Team

Daryk A. Pengelly, AB '03
Director

SEM Keywords

Back to Scope Directory Because more and more individuals are turning to the search engines to help them locate services, products and people on the Web, you will want your Web site to appear in the major search engines (such as www.google.com, www.yahoo.com, www.aol.com, www.msn.com and www.altavista.com) to compete for the attention of millions of intelligent, yet impatient, Web users. Below are suggested internet keywords for your project: Top 3 Keywords for /index.asp Searches per Month Keywords Max Bid # of Bidders Top Company Present?
