Recruiting at Harvard - The President Got It Wrong (Op-Ed)

By: Akiba Smith Francis 00, MBA 04 The President has disappointed me – Harvard’s President, that is. In her Baccalaureate address on June 3, 2008, President Faust raised the issue of why so many Harvard students take jobs in the fields of consulting and finance after graduation and why so many of them find that fact troublesome. She cited a Harvard Crimson survey indicating that the Class of 2007 reported that 58 percent of men and 43 percent of women entering the workforce chose consulting and finance and even this year, in challenging economic times, the overall figure is 39 percent. The President’s response to her students’ concern was: I find myself in some ways less interested in answering your question than in figuring out why you are posing it. If finance is indeed the rational choice, [ostensibly because it pays well] why do you keep raising this issue with me? Why does this seemingly rational choice strike a number of you as not understandable, as not entirely rational, as...

David Rockefeller gives $100 million for Harvard Undergraduate Programs

David Rockefeller, a member of the Harvard College Class of 1936 and longtime University benefactor, has pledged $100 million to increase dramatically learning opportunities for Harvard undergraduates through international experiences and participation in the arts. Mr. Rockefellers is the largest gift from an alumnus in Harvards history. Harvard opened my eyes and my mind to the world, Mr. Rockefeller said. It was because of Harvards language requirement that I spent the summer of 1933 in Germany and saw firsthand the ominous rise of fascism. And it was at Harvard that I first studied art history. Harvard provided me with an intellectual framework to understand what I was seeing and experiencing that has stayed with me for my entire life. I have enjoyed working with President Faust in structuring this gift and I support her vision for Harvards future. In that context, I hope my gift will help enable future Harvard undergraduates to experience similar opportunities to learn about...

Speaker at BSA Banquet Urges Attendees to Apply their Education to Social Change

Honoring social activist Robert Lewis, Jr. and actress Gabrielle Union for their dedication to community outreach, the Harvard Black Students Association (BSA) hosted the third annual Crimson and Black Banquet on Friday in Leverett Dining Hall. <br>
<br>
Lewis, a vice president of the nonprofit Boston Foundation, and Union, a vocal spokeswoman about sexual assault, discussed social change at the event, which celebrated the Black community’s achievements in community service. <br>
<br>
“We really wanted people to see that even beyond Harvard, they could continue to be active and could continue to impact the community,” said BSA Arts and Entertainment Chair Brittany J. Walker-Meade ’10. <br>
<br>
The event hosted approximately 175 undegraduates, alumni, and members of the greater Boston community, according to Sarah Lockridge-Steckel ’09, president of BSA. <br>
<br>
Union’s closing address focused on her experience as a teenage rape victim. In her speech, Union stressed the importance of using personal fortune to help others. She said that her celebrity status has enabled her to make an impact on the fight against sex crimes. <br>
<br>
Many audience members said that Union’s most thought-provoking statement came when she encouraged them to use their Ivy League educations as instruments for social change. <br>
<br>
“Ok. What else ya got?” Union asked of the many tables of Harvard students. Failing to use a Harvard degree to help others was tantamount to not receiving one, Union said. <br>
<br>
Aisha J. Dennis ’08, who founded and organized the first Crimson and Black Banquet in 2006, echoed Union’s words. “I operate in the philosophy that ‘To whom much is given, much more is expected,’” Dennis said. “My hope in creating this event was to inspire more of my peers to go on to be leaders in the continued struggle of the global black community

   The Deshaun Hill and Harvard Stephens Scholarship Fund is proud to announce that it has awarded 2 inaugural scholarships of $1,000 to Jean Junior ’09 and Darryl Finkton ’10. This tremendous step forward was made possible by the help of the greater Harvard community – people like you – and beyond Jean, a pre-medical student who has spent time studying in South Africa, is a junior in Lowell House concentrating in Sociology. On track to be Phi Beta Kappa, she has a near-perfect G.P.A. Darryl, a sophomore in Quincy concentrating in Neurobiology, is an excellent student, active in the Cambridge community and also juggles a busy schedule as a standout on the varsity basketball team. Both are dedicated to giving back to our community and are tremendous students who received exceptionally glowing recommendations from their academic advisors and house administrators.
Gates To Edit Web Magazine on Black America

Professor Henry Louis Skip Gates, Jr. knows the feeling of talking politics in a black barbershop. People don’t say ‘this is left-wing,’ or ‘this is right-wing,’ they just say whatever comes to them, he said. Gates, who is the director of the W.E.B Du Bois Institute for African and African-American Research, said he wanted to channel this barbershop atmosphere in The Root, an online magazine he launched Monday. Geared towards blacks readers, The Root will create a forum for the political ideas of black America, which Gates said are typically oversimplified into a monolithic black point of view by mainstream media. Lynette Clemetson, managing editor of The Root, which is owned by The Washington Post Company, said the Internet’s fluidity will allow a multifaceted dimension of black thought in America to show itself. As an editor, when I’m approaching issues, I want to think about, how many ways can we come at this. If we’ve written from one perspective, can we can quickly...

Out of Africa: Harvard’s African art deserves a permanent exhibit in the new Quincy Street museum

A recent student-made petition has brought to light the fact that Harvard art museums, while displaying an impressive collection of traditional Western art, have no permanent exhibitions of African art. The dearth in exhibits cannot be attributed to a dearth in African art itself—the Fogg and the Peabody museums are both home to several collections of African art that have remained in storage for years. The survey calls for a permanent African art gallery and condemns the archaic, racist views that are causing these collections to be ignored. As the Harvard University Art Museums move forward with their plans for the organization and development of new museums, we echo the survey’s call for a permanent gallery for African art, though we find the claim of archaic, racist views to be extravagant. While many of our peer institutions like Yale and Stanford have permanent exhibits, many structural considerations seem to have hampered the Harvard University Art Museums (HUAM). According...

Why Can't Harvard Be Free?

In the spring of his senior year of high school, Marco A. Morales had to make a choice between a number of excellent schools. One was the historically elite and notoriously expensive Harvard, with its total cost per year surpassing $41,000 in 2007. Another was the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, where every accepted student is offered a scholarship that completely covers tuition. Morales, whose family would have been unable to pick up the tab for four years of college without financial aid, ultimately forwent the ivy-laden gates of Harvard Yard and now—surprisingly—pays more to attend tuition-free Olin than he would have had he come to Cambridge. For many the idea of a free private college education is a fantasy, as tuition rates around the country climb upwards at alarming speeds with no end to the rise in sight. According to Making Harvard Modern by Morton and Phyllis Keller, Harvard’s own tuition has skyrocketed from $2,600 in 1970 to $22,699 in 2000 and currently sits...

Going Global: Harvard Stamps Abroad

The sun never sets on the Harvard empire. In less than a decade, the University has burst beyond its Massachusetts home to establish academic outposts in over a dozen cities across the globe. The Veritas insignia now appears in such far-flung locales as Berlin, Dubai, and Santiago. But despite the enthusiasm for expansion abroad, an anxiety lingers that Harvard will find itself overextended—perhaps endangering its elite status. We don’t want to get into a situation like McDonald’s with a lot of subcontractors [where we] can’t control the quality, says Sultan of Oman Professor of International Relations Joseph S. Nye Jr, who was dean of the Kennedy School of Government (KSG) from 1995 to 2004. There are an infinite number of people who are inviting us to do that, Nye adds. And while many laud Harvard’s intellectual appetite for exposure to other cultures, some fear that Harvard’s efforts to facilitate international experiences could ultimately detract from the education...

Former Duke President Becomes Quiet Corporation Leader

When Nannerl O. Keohane joined the Harvard Corporation in 2005, one of the first things she did was ask for some reading material to help her understand her job. In typical Harvard fashion, the document she was given dated from the 17th century. Keohane, the past president of Duke University and Wellesley College, says that as a political scientist, she was thrilled to connect with more than 300 years of institutional leadership, but said that the incident spoke volumes about Harvard governance. Harvard is quite specifically Harvard, she says. The Corporation and the [Board of] Overseers is not quite the structure I was used to. Two years into her tenure, Keohane has not stopped trying to pin down the details of her job description. She has used her outsider’s perspective—she is the only Corporation member without a Harvard degree—and the tumultuous events of her tenure as an opportunity to parse Harvard’s system of governance—to learn its ins and outs, and how to best...

For Alums Justice Served Online

More than 4,000 Harvard alumni will join the roughly 1,000 undergraduates enrolled in Moral Reasoning 22, Justice, this fall, making the class the first College course available to alumni via online video streaming. Alumni will watch 24 hour-long lectures given by Bass Professor of Government Michael J. Sandel in fall 2005, the last time the course was offered, and they can discuss the course through blogs specially set up for alumni. Sandel will also hold a two-hour long virtual office hour session, according to Justice Online, the Harvard Alumni Association’s Web site for the course. Twenty-one participating Harvard Clubs—from Shanghai to northeast Ohio—will also hold monthly discussion groups for alumni to talk about the course reading. Sandel, who has taught more than 12,000 students in his years offering Justice, wrote in an e-mailed statement that he intends to hold a video-linked class discussion with undergraduates and alumni taking the class this fall.
Ceremony to Kick Off Faust Tenure

Nobel laureate Toni Morrison, Governor Deval L. Patrick ’78, and a host of Harvard luminaries are set to speak at Drew G. Faust’s inauguration ceremony next month, the event that will formally install Harvard’s 28th president. The two-day celebration, which includes musical performances and symposia and culminates with Faust’s installation, will feature not only renowned figures, but also Faust’s longtime friends and family members, including nine former teachers dating back to her days in elementary school in Virginia. Faust was appointed in February and has been managing the University since July 1. These ceremonies, which will be held on Oct. 11 and 12, are a formal University-wide kickoff to her presidency. I’m slightly terrified, Faust said yesterday, adding that she invited her former teachers to walk in the procession because it would be a nice way to honor teaching by honoring them.
1969 Still A Memory: Student Activism Spikes, but Remains A Reflection of the Times

No processed food. No alcohol. Nothing unnatural for the body. The 11 students who planned to participate in a new phase of a campaign targeting Harvard’s treatment of its security guards did not neglect to prepare. Drawing upon consultations with University Health Services doctors and fellow student activists from around the nation, the dissenters began a regimen of denial even before their chosen mode of protest—a hunger strike—kicked off. After nine days of asceticism that saw two participants hospitalized and no movement by the University on the protesters’ main demand—that Harvard get involved in negotiations with the guards’ contractor—the preparation almost seemed worth it. Despite the health problems and the absence of a full victory, the strike became a defining action in a year that Undergraduate Council President Ryan A. Petersen ’08 says was characterized by a greater air of student activism on campus in general. What we’re seeing here is an upsurge. We’re seeing...

We’re seeing...</itunes:summary>

HBS Unveils New MBA Track

Harvard Business School (HBS) unveiled an admissions program yesterday that will accept applications from current college juniors starting this spring for enrollment in the HBS Class of 2013. The school is promoting the program, which will begin this spring, as a way to attract undergraduates with backgrounds in the natural sciences or liberal arts who would not normally pursue a master’s in business administration. Our hope is to really broaden the base of undergraduates who consider a future career in business, said Andrea L. Kimmel, who directs the program. The 2+2 track, named for its schedule of spending two years in the workplace, followed by the two-year MBA curriculum, differs significantly from the experience afforded to most HBS students, who come to the program with more workplace experience&shy;. Currently, HBS admits roughly 20 graduating seniors a year to its MBA program, and also requires two years in the workplace before matriculation. Kimmel said HBS plans...

How Fair is Harvard

Before the hiring of men&#8217;s basketball coach Tommy Amaker in April, the Boston Globe reported that Harvard did not have one African-American among its 32 head coaches&#8212;a glaring statistic for any university committed to diversity. But is anyone concerned about the students who actually play the games? Walk through Dillon Field House, Harvard University&#8217;s central athletics building across the Charles River, and you&#8217;ll see history hanging on the walls. Decades of team photographs line the corridors, testaments to the fact that the Ivy League was an athletic conference long before it became the most powerful brand name in higher education. Look closely at the faces in these pictures, in fact&#8212;from the era of the leather helmet up to the age of Under Armour&#8212;and you might find an old stereotype rearing its head in monochrome. Namely, that the playing fields at fair Harvard tend to be the territory of white elites. While the most recent edition of the...
