Recruiting at Harvard - The President Got It Wrong (Op-Ed)

By: Akiba Smith Francis 00, MBA 04 The President has disappointed me – Harvard’s President, that is. In her Baccalaureate address on June 3, 2008, President Faust raised the issue of why so many Harvard students take jobs in the fields of consulting and finance after graduation and why so many of them find that fact troublesome. She cited a Harvard Crimson survey indicating that the Class of 2007 reported that 58 percent of men and 43 percent of women entering the workforce chose consulting and finance and even this year, in challenging economic times, the overall figure is 39 percent. The President’s response to her students’ concern was: I find myself in some ways less interested in answering your question than in figuring out why you are posing it. If finance is indeed the rational choice, [ostensibly because it pays well] why do you keep raising this issue with me? Why does this seemingly rational choice strike a number of you as not understandable, as not entirely rational, as...

David Rockefeller gives $100 million for Harvard Undergraduate Programs

David Rockefeller, a member of the Harvard College Class of 1936 and longtime University benefactor, has pledged $100 million to increase dramatically learning opportunities for Harvard undergraduates through international experiences and participation in the arts. Mr. Rockefellers is the largest gift from an alumnus in Harvards history. Harvard opened my eyes and my mind to the world, Mr. Rockefeller said. It was because of Harvards language requirement that I spent the summer of 1933 in Germany and saw firsthand the ominous rise of fascism. And it was at Harvard that I first studied art history. Harvard provided me with an intellectual framework to understand what I was seeing and experiencing that has stayed with me for my entire life. I have enjoyed working with President Faust in structuring this gift and I support her vision for Harvards future. In that context, I hope my gift will help enable future Harvard undergraduates to experience similar opportunities to learn about...

Speaker at BSA Banquet Urges Attendees to Apply their Education to Social Change

Honoring social activist Robert Lewis, Jr. and actress Gabrielle Union for their dedication to community outreach, the Harvard Black Students Association (BSA) hosted the third annual Crimson and Black Banquet on Friday in Leverett Dining Hall.

Lewis, a vice president of the nonprofit Boston Foundation, and Union, a vocal spokeswoman about sexual assault, discussed social change at the event, which celebrated the Black community’s achievements in community service.

“We really wanted people to see that even beyond Harvard, they could continue to be active and could continue to impact the community,” said BSA Arts and Entertainment Chair Brittany J. Walker-Meade ’10.

The event hosted approximately 175 undegraduates, alumni, and members of the greater Boston community, according to Sarah Lockridge-Steckel ’09, president of BSA.

Union’s closing address focused on her experience as a teenage rape victim. In her speech, Union stressed the importance of using personal fortune to help others. She said that her celebrity status has enabled her to make an impact on the fight against sex crimes.

Many audience members said that Union’s most thought-provoking statement came when she encouraged them to use their Ivy League educations as instruments for social change.

“Ok. What else ya got?” Union asked of the many tables of Harvard students. Failing to use a Harvard degree to help others was tantamount to not receiving one, Union said.

Aisha J. Dennis ’08, who founded and organized the first Crimson and Black Banquet in 2006, echoed Union’s words. “I operate in the philosophy that ‘To whom much is given, much more is expected,’” Dennis said. “My hope in creating this event was to inspire more of my peers to go on to be leaders in the continued struggle of the global black community

The Deshaun Hill and Harvard Stephens Scholarship Fund is proud to announce that it has awarded 2 inaugural scholarships of $1,000 to Jean Junior ’09 and Darryl Finkton ’10. This tremendous step forward was made possible by the help of the greater Harvard community – people like you – and beyond Jean, a pre-medical student who has spent time studying in South Africa, is a junior in Lowell House concentrating in Sociology. On track to be Phi Beta Kappa, she has a near-perfect G.P.A. Darryl, a sophomore in Quincy concentrating in Neurobiology, is an excellent student, active in the Cambridge community and also juggles a busy schedule as a standout on the varsity basketball team. Both are dedicated to giving back to our community and are tremendous students who received exceptionally glowing recommendations from their academic advisors and house administrators.
