Habari gani? That’s Swahili for “what is the news”? The news is that the Kuumba Singers of Harvard University are celebrating their 40^th anniversary and their Spring Tour is to Atlanta. Named after the Swahili term for “creativity,” the Kuumba Singers are presenting four free public concerts in Atlanta from March 14 to March 19, 2010! There are many Kuumba alumni in Atlanta. Please join us for at least one very special performance by this diverse group of current Harvard students dedicated to “Celebrating Black Creativity and Spirituality Since 1970.”

HBAS-DC: Happy Hour for Haiti Benefit-Thursday, March 4th

This March three soldiers Johann Richards, Emmanuel Bellegarde and Gideon Fils will travel to Haiti in order to spread love to Haiti by providing tents that will provide shelter for families in need before the beginning of Haiti's rainy season. With your help, we would like to return to Haiti at the end of March with tents that will provide shelter for families in need for six months up to a year.

To support this effort, please join us for our Soldier of Love Happy Hour at the successful British import Ping Pong Dim Sum, a rampantly popular London dumpling destination newly minted in the Gallery Place/ Chinatown enclave of DC (Note: No actual table tennis is involved.)

Thanks again everyone for attending our first development meeting. Our next meeting is scheduled for January 31, 2010 at 5 EST. The purpose of our next meeting will be primarily to discuss: corporate sponsors, give-aways, rewards, and corporate discounts. We came up with several topics (which I have listed on hold for now), because if we can at least figure out the game plan for these four things, then we can splinter off and start working on our hold item of choice. Happy New Year from HBAS

Happy New Year. We are extremely excited about the opportunities that 2010 has in store and look forward to bringing you the programming and services you have come to know. As a follow up to the Global Networking Night that HBAS hosted in conjunction with the Harvard Alumni Association on December 30, 2009, we are pleased to announce that we will also be sponsoring a Global Day of Service in 2010.

In addition, HBAS and HAA are thrilled to offer Harvard black alumni the opportunity to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Ghana. The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Program - A Study of the Gold Coasts Natural History, Cultural Relevance and Heritage – will take place from March 12, 2010 - March 21, 2010. Prof. Emmanuel Akyeampong, Chair of the Committee on African Studies, and Loeb Harvard College Professor, is personally escorting this small group - limited to 20 travelers! This journey will concentrate on Ghana’s rich history, concentrating on Slave Trade issues and also natural areas of interest, such as World Heritage Sites, which have been shaped by the Slave Trade and Ghana’s rich history, its traditions, and its people.

Alumni who atteneded the HBAS-DC Holiday Dinner Party at Hominy

Through the Early College Awareness Program, HBAS will continue to offer alumni the opportunity to serve as ambassadors and provide information about the college application and financial aid process to eighth graders who will likely become the first in their family to attend college. HBAS also remains committed to the Summer Public Service Fellowships and will award its 4^th grant this spring to a student who has proven their dedication to sharing their talents and abilities with underserved communities and plans to pursue a career in the public sector.

On the local front, HBAS-DC will join forces with the Yale Black Alumni Society to host a joint community service project on Monday, January 18, 2010 to commemorate the life of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. HBAS New York has also recently announced a partnership with Admit Advantage, a premier MBA advisory company which assists individuals in formulating successful business school applications. To that end, HBASNY will be hosting workshops on how to apply to business school starting in May.

Finally, the HBAS Development Committee will be holding an introductory meeting this Sunday at 5 EST for all alumni who are interested in getting involved in fundraising in the coming year. Topics for discussion include: HBAS annual operating budget, strategies for increasing gifts to the annual fund, corporate outreach, committee member roles and responsibilities, and 2010 fundraising goals. MLK Day is an event sponsored by Greater DC Cares and Target that brings out thousands of people to honor Dr. King's legacy of service! This year, MLK Day projects will have a special focus on supporting youth and education. We will be working with schools, after school programs, and a variety of educational nonprofits across MD, DC, and VA to really make a difference in the lives of area youth.

As we reflect back on the programming of 2009, I would like to affirm our commitment in the upcoming year to delivering events that are dynamic and inclusive with the aim of uniting Harvard’s Black alumni community and supporting them professionally, socially and intellectually – enabling them to be a powerful force for justice and truth in community.

HBASNY 2009 PROGRAMMING SUMMARY

“Has Our Nation Moved Beyond Race?” On March 2, 2009, the Harvard Black Alumni Society of New York, with support from the Harvard Alumni Association and the Harvard Club of New York, hosted a panel discussion on the impact of the election of America's first African American President on race relations in our country. Speakers included New York Times columnist Frank Rich AB '71, author David Frum JD '87, Harvard professor Jennifer Hochschild and Columbia professor Fredrick Harris; moderated by HBASNY member Brandon Terry AB '05. “Harvard Black Alumni Weekend” During the weekend of September 25, over 500 alumni and students gathered in Cambridge for the triennial Harvard Black Alumni Weekent to celebrate together the remarkable legacy of Black alumni at Harvard University. This event was made possible by the co-chairs of the weekend, Justin Alexander AB ‘03, Natalya Davis AB ’04 and Heather Johnston AB ‘86. The weekend featured events and panels on philanthropy, healthcare, the arts, finance and career development among others. Remarks from Harvard University President Drew Faust opened the weekend with others such as David Evans, James E. Johnson AB '83, JD '86 and Alphonse “Buddy” Fletcher AB ’87 delivering powerful testimonials on their formative years at Harvard.

“Working to Address the High School Dropout Crisis: The Civil Rights Issue of Our Generation” On September 30, 2009, the Harvard Black Alumni Society of New York launched a year-long initiative on education with a panel discussion on the systemic problems facing public education and what we can do to get our students back on track. This event was supported by the Harvard Alumni Association, the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Scholastic, Inc. and the America’s Promise Alliance. The event sold out less than week after its first announcement, and engaged well over 400 attendees in dialogue around the dropout crisis. The discussion convened an esteemed panel of experts who stood at the nexus of policy and practice, representing academia, national service, teaching and policy-making. Dean Kathleen McCartney of the Harvard Graduate School of Education moderated the panel which included: Assistant Secretary Russlynn Ali (U.S. Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights), Michael Brown, CEO and Co-Founder (City Year), Chancellor Joel Klein (New York City Department of Education), and Dr. Pedro Noguera (Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education at New York University). The event also featured remarks from The Hon. Michael Powell, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission and current America’s Promise Alliance board member. The Harvard Black Alumni Society of New York’s initiative on education has continued with service events that have engaged HBASNY members in tutoring, writing workshops and other activities with high school students. On October 24, 2009, the HBASNY, in cooperation with the Harvard Black Law Students Association, hosted an essay-writing workshop for high school students applying to college at Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO).

“Private Tour of Lincoln Exhibition at the NY Historical Society” On November 6, 2009, the Harvard Black Alumni Society of New York, thanks to the help of HBASNY member Jacqueline Adams MBA ’78, held a private tour at the New York Historical Society of a new exhibition on Lincoln and slavery. “Annual Holiday Party” On December 9, 2009, the Harvard Black Alumni Society of New York celebrated the holiday season and the new year with over 150 alumni who attended our annual Holiday Party. This event was offered free for all guests thanks to the generous support of six committed alumni who made financial commitments to support the event: Daniel Houston AB '01 (The Parlor Club); Heather Johnston AB '86 (SoGood.TV); Kofi Kankam AB '97, M.Ed. '98 (Admit Advantage); Andwele Lewis AB '98, MBA '03 (Morgan Stanley); Abdel Reid AB '06 (3i); and R. John Smith AB '80 (Tax Law Office of R. John Smith). **Organizational Leadership** After serving for three years as Co-President of the Harvard Black Alumni Society of New York, Azhar Richmond AB ’05, MBA ’11 resigned as Co-President. Since Azhar’s resignation, two alumni have joined HBASNY President Enoch Woodhouse AB’07 on the organization’s Executive Board. Saratu Nafziger JD ’05 now serves as the Treasurer of the HBASNY and C. Kuumba in DC -Tonight

Kuumba is a wonderful singing group that I was in during college. The group's mission is to celebrate black creativity and spirituality. Kuumba is in DC on the annual spring break tour and the last full concert is TONIGHT! There is one more service on Saturday (see Kuumba link below). Details for tonight are as follows:
