Please join the SF/Bay Area chapter of HBAS for a screening of Byron Hurt's fantastic new documentary, Soul Food Junkies. Soul Food Junkies explores the pleasures of soul food as well as its health consequences.

Here are the details:

Wednesday, January 16, at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center from 6pm - 9pm. The OACC is located at:
388 9th Street, Suite 290 (between Franklin and Webster)
Right next to 12th Street BART station.

This event is free and open to the public. A panel discussion will follow after the screening. If you live in the Bay area, please come, bring friends, and spread the word!!!

Dear Members of the Harvard Black Alumni Society,

We trust the holiday season is treating you well.

The National Steering Committee would like to take a moment to share some exciting news from HBAS including our upcoming 10 year anniversary, the appointment of our new President, Lawrence E. Adjah, and the new ways we encourage you to be involved in the next phase organization’s future.

2012 marks the 10 year anniversary of the Harvard Black Alumni Society’s founding and a year ahead of our next Harvard Black Alumni Weekend (2013). In the midst of these great milestones, HBAS has been in transition, organizationally and strategically to prepare for the years ahead.

Our Gratitude:

We are fortunate to be a position to celebrate these great milestones because of the tireless work of our founding members and your commitment.

This year, three core members of HBAS and the NSC stepped down from their leadership posts. Danice Woodley (AB '00, JD '05), a founding member, transitioned from her role as President having tirelessly served for the Steering Committee in many capacities for nearly a decade. Chris-Tia Donaldson (AB '00, JD '03), President Emeritus and transitioned from her role as Development Chair; Donaldson served as HBAS President from 2002 - 2010. Natalya Davis (AB '04), formerly a Co-Chair for Black Alumni Weekend 2009 stepped down from her role as Communications Chair. Please join us thanking them for their vision, love and ongoing service towards serving and cultivating the Harvard Black Alumni Community.

Our New Leadership:

We’re excited to announce the appointment of Lawrence E. Adjah (AB ’06) (adjah@po st.harvard.edu) to President of HBAS (see bio below). From his time serving the Harvard Black community at the college, as BSA President, to his service on the HBAS board as Alumni Affairs Chair and most recently, Vice President, he’s been a dedicated servant to the Harvard Black alumni community. We’re fortunate to have his leadership in the next phase of our organization’s efforts. Please join us in congratulating Lawrence and offering him well wishes in his stewardship of this great organization moving forward.

Our Next Steps & New Ways to Get Involved:

Over the next few months, we’ll initiate our campaign for Harvard Black Alumni Weekend 2013, celebrate our 10^th Anniversary and will expand our leadership opportunities within the organization.

In the short-term, we’re excited to engage with you about the year ahead at our upcoming local Holiday Parties in the next month, please be on the lookout for our National Holiday Party correspondence over the next week.

In the long-term, we’re already head first in strategic planning for the next two years of our organization’s future. You are instrumental in our future and we would like to thank you for all your support over the past decade and we look forward to continuing to build this community with you for years to come.

We are in the process of initiating our formal nomination process for leadership roles in our HBAS Atlanta, Chicago and Southern California locations.

If you’re interested in getting involved at this level, please contact our Alumni Affairs Chair, Saratu Nafziger, JD ‘05 (saratugrace@gmail.com) to learn more. We’ll share more information about this process in the next few weeks.

We’ll also be initiating a formal process for vacancies on the National Steering Committee by mid-December.

Lawrence E. Adjah - Bio

Lawrence E. Adjah (AB ’06), served as the Alumni Affairs Chair of HBAS before his most recent role as HBAS Vice President.
Professionally, he serves as the Co-Founder and Principal of Catalyst (Media LLC) a new generation production company that will enable content developers to realize the full economic potential of content through both an in-house predictive analytics platform and a real-time consumer demand platform that allows us to crowd-source feedback on content that audiences actually want to watch.

He is also the Founder and CEO of Adjah, an entertainment advisory firm which consults for companies across primarily film, sports and media, working more recently with the Urbanworld Film Festival sponsored by HBO and BET, which has, over a 15 year period, premiered more number one films (based on opening weekend box- office receipts) than any other domestic film festival, some of these include Collateral, Love and Basketball, Hero, Barbershop and academy award winning documentary features like Murder on a Sunday Morning (2001). He has also done extensive work with celebrity foundations and organizations, working with The Giving Back Fund, as well as serving as a professional mentor for George Washington University Business School’s STAR EMBA program.

Prior to founding Adjah, Lawrence served as the Senior Director of Business Development at a leading sports and entertainment marketing agency in New York. In this role, he led a division that negotiated secured over $100M of gross sponsorship revenue, from clients that include the LPGA, Ironman, Manny Pacquiao and other sports properties. Before this role, Lawrence worked as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company in its New York office. He advised clients in the Media & Entertainment practice, helping to serve some of the world’s largest professional sports organizations and media companies including the NFL.

Prior to joining McKinsey, Lawrence received a Masters in Sports Management from the University of Texas at Austin and was a member of the Men’s Track and Field team and completed the two year program in one year, with academic distinction. Before becoming a Longhorn, Lawrence received a B.A. from Harvard University, where he entered as a high school All-American and National Champion in the multi-events in Track and Field and later achieved multiple All-Ivy League and All-East Honors in the triple jump.

He’s currently completing his MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business where he serves as the President of its Black Business Students Association (BBSA), an Arbuckle Leadership Fellow and a Course Assistant with Dean Garth Saloner for the first year MBA Strategic Management course. He focuses a lot of charitable work in the area of youth education through his fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity Inc. and other community based organizations.

Remembering Derrick Bell

Dear Members of the Harvard Black Alumni Society,  

The Harvard Black Alumni Society National Steering Committee is saddened to announce the passing of Derrick Albert Bell Jr., a legal scholar and trailblazer, who passed away in New York City at the age of 80. Known for his valiant and defiant spirit, Bell was named the first tenured black professor at Harvard Law School.

Bell's career spans the stretch of the U.S. including time spent leading the University of Oregon School of Law and serving as senior faculty at both Harvard Law School and New York University School of Law. Bell will be remembered for holding true to his core beliefs and acting in protest. Bell resigned from his deanship after 5 years when the University of Oregon School of Law did not offer an Asian-American scholar a position. One year later, at Harvard, Bell organized a sit-in to protest Harvard Law School's diversity hiring practices.

Born November 6, 1930 in Pittsburgh, Bell dedicated himself to racial equality working for such prestigious institutions as the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and the N.A.A.C.P. Legal Defense and Education Fund. He received his A.B. from Duquesne University in 1952 and his law credentials from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1957. Know for his acute views on the intersection of race and law, Bell wrote Race, Racism, and American Law, a text considered a hallmark of critical race theory.

The Harvard Black Alumni Society is thankful to Bell for his steadfast commitment to racial equality. Bell's legacy is part of the fabric of black leadership at the University. His legacy will live on through his scholarship and writings.

Bell is survived by his wife, Janet Dewart Bell, along with three children and three siblings.

Randall Robinson is best known for his socio-political beliefs and influence on modern day thinking about human rights. A Harvard Law School graduate, he is now a distinguished scholar in residence at the Pennsylvania State University Dickinson School of Law.

He is the founder and past president of TransAfrica, the African-American organization that he created to promote enlightened, constructive policies toward Africa and the Caribbean. In 1984, he established the Free South Africa Movement, which pushed successfully for the imposition of sanctions against apartheid South Africa and in 1994, his public advocacy, including a 27-day hunger strike, led to the UN multinational operation that restored Haiti's first democratically elected government to power.

Robinson is the author of "An Unbroken Agony" and the national best-sellers, "The Debt: What America Owes to Blacks" and "The Reckoning: What Blacks Owe to Each Other."

Harvard Professor Charles Ogletree Jr. describes Robinson's newest book, "Makeda," as "a soaring, wrenching and ultimately revealing glimpse into the roles within a powerful matriarchal family..A must-read for anyone who wants to appreciate history, the role of women, and the significance of transferring ideas, goals and ambitions from one generation to the next."

The composition of the Board of Advisor is diverse in its representation of alumni from different classes, professions, and geographic locations to ensure that the Board gives the Harvard Black Alumni Society the greatest access to the wisdom and expertise of its alumni.

Membership in the Harvard Black Alumni Society is open to all degree holders of Harvard University and as of January 2007 is free.
