"I encourage younger people to seek out mentors, and I take every opportunity to pass on whatever advice and guidance I can to those who can benefit from it."

About HBAS

Dear Alumni, Alumnae, and Friends:

Welcome to the Harvard Black Alumni Society Website! Whether you are an alumnus, current student, prospective student, member of the faculty or a university administrator, we hope that you will find the information contained herein useful. We invite you to explore the HBAS website and to discover the numerous opportunities to get involved in our efforts to build and strengthen the Harvard black alumni community.

The Harvard Black Alumni Society was founded on March 7, 2002 by nine alumni from Harvard College dedicated to the idea of building and strengthening the Harvard black alumni community in Boston. Once a small gathering of local alumni, HBAS has grown into a national organization with operations in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Washington D.C. In addition to hosting events in various cities around the country for the purpose of bringing alumni together for socializing and networking, we currently:

  • Coordinate the Black Alumni Mentoring Program which pairs a current black undergraduate and/or recent alumnus with a mentor, usually an older alumnus, in their professional field of interest
  • Publish a monthly e-newsletter which features news and information of interest to black Harvard alumni;
  • Collaborate with student groups such as the Harvard Black Men's Forum to host events, such as the 10th Annual Celebration of Black Women, where we honored Phylicia Rashad, best known for her role as Claire Huxtable on the Cosby Show, as Women of the Year;
  • Sponsor professional development and academic workshops for black undergraduates on topics ranging from applying to law school to writing a senior thesis;
  • Work with the Office of Admissions to organize an annual alumni phon-a-thon to contact all of the black admitted students to Harvard College;
  • Maintain a national list serv of 1800+ alumni, making it the largest online network of black ivy league graduates.

While the past few years have been amazing for us, we have only scratched the surface!! The potential for this organization is quite awe-inspiring and we are amazed every time we think about the impact our membership has had on the global community. Among our ranks are CEOs of major corporations, general counsels of Fortune 500 companies, leaders on Wall Street, prominent politicians, social advocates, federal and state judges, academics in every discipline, successful entrepreneurs, novelists and entertainers, and a host of other leaders in their chosen fields.

Many organizations are built on the belief that people united can achieve great ends. HBAS is no different. We look to you, our friends, families, acquaintances, classmates, colleagues, sponsors, and fellow alumni to join and support us in this effort of community building.
