Spotlight: Alonzo Sherman
Alonzo Sherman
AB, Economics, 2003
Alonzo was born and raised in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn . He attended Brooklyn Technical High School where he majored in Biochemistry and led the Varsity Swimming Team to four consecutive Division Championships. Alonzo also trained and competed for Trots Finmen Swim Club, one of a handful of all-black competitive swimming programs in the country. He graduated from Harvard College in 2003 with an AB cum laude in Economics. During his tenure at Harvard, Alonzo engrossed himself in the Harvard community. In his senior year, Alonzo served as President of the Harvard Black Men's Forum, an organization with which he had been integrally involved since his freshman year. As Minority Recruiting Coordinator in the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, Alonzo was the first point of contact for thousands of prospective and incoming students. Despite being a top-ranked competitive swimmer, Alonzo walked-on to the Varsity Lightweight Crew Team. A resident of Mather House, Alonzo was also an active member of the Black Student's Association and the Snowboard Club.
Regarding his views on mentoring, Alonzo had the following to say: "Often we see the mentor-mentee relationship in the same light as the teacher-student relationship. I think that mentorship is much more dynamic, it's a two-way street. In addition to imparting knowledge and experience, I have learned much about myself as I developed relationships with my mentees."
Alonzo was formerly a senior banking analyst in the healthcare corporate finance group at UBS Investment Bank and is curently working at a private equity firm in New York City. In his spare time he enjoys snowboarding/skiing, marathon swimming and spending time with family and friends.
Alonzo is currently mentoring Curry Cheek '08, but may be willing to take on additional mentees.
Please welcome Alonzo to the BAM family.
