HBASNY: Waiting for 'Superman' Movie Screening and Discussion -- 9/23/10
Dear All,
Welcome to a new year of HBASNY programming! We hope that you will join the Harvard Black Alumni Society of New York and America's Promise Alliance for a screening and discussion of the seminal new documentary Waiting for 'Superman'. From the director of "An Inconvenient Truth," the film examines the crisis of public education in the U.S. through multiple interlocking stories - from a handful of students and their families whose futures hang in the balance, to the educators and reformers trying to find lasting solutions within a broken education system.
The event will be held on Thursday, September 23rd, 2010 from 5:30pm – 9:00pm at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema (143 East Houston Street, NY, NY) and will feature a screening of Waiting for ‘Superman’ from 5:30pm – 8:00pm and a discussion of the film, moderated by former Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Michael Powell from 8:00pm – 9:00pm. This event is free but space is limited; RSVP is required.
We hope that you can join us for this exciting event -- one day before the film's official release in New York and Los Angeles. Waiting for 'Superman' has the potential to serve as a catalyst for a national movement on behalf of our young people and their access to more opportunities for an excellent education. Check out a recent NY Magazine article about Waiting for ‘Superman’.
The Harvard Black Alumni Society of New York is pleased to host this program as part of our continued commitment to facilitating discourse around relevant African American issues and among them, few are more pressing than public education.
